Let There Be Water…

The Romans were the engineers of the aqueducts still standing in many parts of Italy. These shots were taken by our friend G., right outside of Lucca.

From the top.

Under the aqueduct.

My favorite view.

  1. And I’m going to see it next spring!

  2. Maybe the Romans invented aqueducts, but this one was designed and built by the Lucchese engineer Lorenzo Nottolini in the 1840s. It used to carry water from springs in the Pisan mountains to the fountains of Lucca, also designed by Nottolini, All went well until they built the Firenze–Pisa Nord autostrada right through the aqueduct. The water now runs in a pipe underground. It tastes delicious because it’s purified using ultraviolet rays instead of chlorine. You can drink it from the fountain near San Michele called ‘Purpurona’. I’ll try to remember to take a photo next time I’m in Lucca and post it. The park at the far end in Guamo is fascinating and beautiful. Other monuments designed by Nottolini in the the chain bridge at Bagni di Lucca and the Convento Sant’Angelo above Ponte a Moriano.

  3. Those shots are amazing, G. you are a talented photographer!
