We arrived at our house in Sant’ Andrea di Compito late in the evening. It was too dark to really check out the area surrounding the house, but you could hear that there was water nearby. In the morning when I opened the shutters I saw that there was a stream just on the other side of the road. It wasn’t until later that day when we decided to explore the area above the house, that I realized just how much water there was-a raging brook complete with a waterfall.
Back when we were getting the scoop on the house and the town, the owner told us about how the locals would walk up into the hills to get water. I wasn’t quite sure what she meant by that. I envisioned nonnas filling buckets in the stream and hauling them back to their houses. A few days later as we drove down the hill into town we noticed a few cars pulled over on the side of the road with the trunks of their cars open. I could see that they all had and water bottles and were filling them up from a spout. This is what our landlady was talking about! We decided to get in on the action and so J. and G. went armed with bottles and filled them up. We were officially part of the community. By the way-the water was wonderful.
